“Kobik?  What do you mean you fixed it?”

His foster daughter bounced excitedly in front of him as he crouched down to speak to her.

Bucky was about to leave to take you on your honeymoon while his kids went down to Louisiana to spend time with Sam and Sarah.  When Kobik heard that she wouldn’t see you again for a year her powers had activated.  The little girl who was made from the shards of a cosmic cube could alter reality itself.  She could rewrite history and create life from nothing.  When nothing obvious was changed it made Bucky worry that little bit more.

“I fixed it,” Kobik replied and looked up at you.  “Now you can stay forever and ever.”

Chapter 16

The wedding reception had been the most fun Bucky could remember having since before leaving for war.  Maybe ever.  He’d booked the convention room at a hotel with views of the falls, and spent a long time working with them so that not only was it all vegan options, they were all bright and colorful and using ingredients that you wouldn’t normally see.  There was a salad of mint, peaches, and cucumber, or an Italian wedding soup to start, along with platters of colorful dips paired with warm bread, baby carrots, and crackers.  For the entrees, there was a choice between wild mushroom risotto or ratatouille.  When dessert came along slices of the wedding cake were served with house-made gelato and fresh fruit.  Each glass of champagne was served with a hibiscus flower inside that bloomed when the fizzing liquid touched it.

You had been delighted by every dish and he made sure both you and he always had different courses so that you could try everything.  Sam and Steve had both made speeches and the two of you had danced your first dance and it had been like the rest of the guests didn’t exist, it was just the two of you, eyes locked as you spun around the dance floor.

He had danced with Kobik and you had danced with both Steve and a surprisingly unreluctant RJ.

Chapter 15

The trip north from Springfield to Niagara Falls was quite an event.  With all the planning Bucky had done he’d never really considered that he’d end up with a convoy of people following him.

To be fair, he hadn’t expected to have needed to call in the entire guest list and some to help him call you to him this year either.  Yet, while many had dispersed to return to their normal lives with the plan of going to Niagara closer to the wedding date, Sam, Sarah, Sharon, and Steve had stuck around to help with the last few wedding preparations.

Originally, because Steve was so hard to get to anymore, Bucky planned on doing this without him.  That had hurt to think about, but ‘if you need me’ didn’t translate to good things like wedding days – at least not to Bucky.  But Steve was here now, and he’d had been adamant he stayed for it.  So now Bucky’s wedding party had three people and not two.

Uncle Bucky

The sound of a child’s crying caught Bucky’s attention as he went to use the bathroom in Howard’s mansion.  It was a sound Bucky was no stranger to.  He had kids.  They were all grown up now and making their own way in the world, but he’d spent plenty of years where he’d had to patch grazed knees, soothe fevers, and comfort broken hearts.  The sound always triggered that nurturing protective part of him, like a wolf caring for its pups.  Even now, as he crept up on 60 and his oldest daughter Rebecca was expecting her own baby it brought on instant dad mode.

Chapter 14

The winter was shorter than it usually was.  Bucky worried that the late start and the unusual warmth would mean that people weren’t wishing you were here strongly enough to bring you.  He debated various options.  Your dress was being made nearby, so if he went further North you wouldn’t be able to get the final fitting done – but maybe if he picked it up you could find a tailor where you were to finish it off.

He couldn’t remember ever wishing that the winter was colder before but he was definitely wishing it now.

It was just before the frosts started to lift that a new idea came to him.  He called up everyone he knew.  Everyone.  Not just his friends, but the acquaintances that seemed to tolerate him more than like him.  The people who didn’t really know him – they just knew of him because of Steve.  He contacted people who were off on adventures in space.  He contacted people that if he was honest with himself he was a little scared of.  He contacted people who owed him and ones he owed and had no right to ask anything of.  No stone was left unturned.  No favor was left uncashed.

Chapter 13

Bucky couldn’t remember the last time he had such a long stretch of feeling good and hopeful.  Even back before the war when he was that carefree guy he didn’t even recognize anymore, he had periods where he worried about his parents making ends meet or Steve’s health would be so bad that he’d worry he wouldn’t survive the week.  Yes, back then Bucky hadn’t experienced the trauma he’d been through now, and he’d played up the happy-go-lucky ladies-man image, but there were times where things were dark and he was scared or depressed or just didn’t feel like participating in the world.

This year it almost felt like he was experiencing one long high.  Even going on a mission couldn’t dampen his spirits completely.  In fact, it was a mission that ended up getting him that little bit closer to the life he had started daydreaming about.

Chapter 12

The time that Bucky had with you felt particularly short this time.  Not because it was any less time than usual.  It was a particularly cold winter and the power that kept you here actually seemed to last longer than normal.  It was just that you were both so busy planning the wedding that each day seemed to fly by.  Even the long drives North were full of conversation as you talked about guests, and vows, and what colors you planned to wear.

The two of you stopped regularly to look at potential venues and had long discussions about menus and cake flavors.  Each conversation made Bucky feel lighter.  He was sure that the wedding plans were going to give him some level of anxiety when it was just him, but with you by his side, he couldn’t help but feel happy and excited.  He was going to experience a big life event, and he was going to do it with someone who loved him for who he was.  Not some idealized version of who he once was or who he might be.  But this him, with all the baggage and flaws he had.  This version of who he was that was hurt, but not broken.  A long way from perfect, but trying to be better.

Chapter 10

Over the next year apart, Bucky was busy with a few major changes on top of his already very busy life.  All the things he usually filled his life with – the missions, the friends, the therapy, the volunteer work – all kept him just as busy as it always did, but he started considering what he really wanted for himself.

Bucky had started to realize that four different people had inhabited his body since he’d reached adulthood.  They were all related, but they were all so different that it was hard to think of them as the same person.  His therapist might have told him he was compartmentalizing.  It wasn’t that though.  Sometimes he wished he could compartmentalize like that and say he wasn’t to blame for what the Winter Soldier did.  It was more like there were these stages where his life was a certain way, and he expected certain things and he needed to come to terms both with letting go of who he was then and what he had thought he wanted.

Chapter 9

As the years passed, Bucky worked hard.  Not just in the hero role he’d taken on, but at himself.  Both things began meshing together, so that his jobs weren’t about revenge or getting even, but helping people and making the world a better place.  He started to work with kids who had been put in situations like him.  Ones with powers that people thought they could use or manipulate, and kids that had suffered trauma and abuse and were so full of rage they didn’t know how to deal with.  He went to therapy and he took cooking classes.  He visited Sam and Sarah and hung out like a normal guy who hadn’t been tortured and used as a weapon for over sixty years.  And the more he pretended that that was true, the closer to feeling like it was true he got.

He knew he was always going to have to carry around what had happened to him and what he had done.  Those things don’t just go away even when you do work at them.  But as the years passed, it felt like it was easier to carry, and more than that, it began to feel like something he carried rather than something he was.  It stopped defining him and taking up most of what made him.  First, the other things started to push them back.  Bucky Barnes – the superhero.  Bucky Barnes – friend.  Bucky Barnes – wannabe chef.  Bucky Barnes – cat owner.  Bucky Barnes – grumpy big brother and mentor.  Then after that, it was torture survivor and programmed assassin.  With each new thing he gave himself, it made less room to be the things that he hated.
