Chapter 8

Bucky had never expected to ever want to chase winter.  He put up with winter mostly because the heat was unbearable when you spent all your time in a leather jacket with matching gloves – not to mention how fucking hot his metal arm could get under the sun.  He was always glad winter was over and he felt like he could breathe again, and the thought of moving more and more north to avoid that endpoint would have been crazy to him even two years ago.

Yet here he was, not only chasing the winter but enjoying it.  Moments where he let himself just be an average everyday guy, were so rare since he broke free from HYDRA.  There was Wakanda and the time he spent with Sam and his family, but those moments were few and far between and this was the first time he’d ever allowed himself to have an actual vacation where there wasn’t at least some busy work to do to keep his mind and body occupied.

Chapter 7

The first day in Niagara falls Bucky had felt as average as he had ever felt.  In the small crowd of people who had come to see the falls in winter, he was just one part of a happy couple doing stupid touristy things amongst the hundreds of other happy couples doing touristy things.  He didn’t have a person to tail, or a meeting to make.  There was no imminent attack that he was supposed to stop.  He didn’t even have a therapy session he needed to go to that would make him relive his trauma until he felt picked apart and raw.  It also had the added bonus that, given how cold it was, he wasn’t drawing any attention for wearing a coat and his gloves.  He was just one more guy strolling along with his girlfriend beside the raging waters of Niagara falls in full winter clothing.

He never imagined he’d feel so good to be so average.

“I still can’t get over how loud it is,” Bucky yelled.  The sound of the falls drowned out everything and even shouting it was hard to be heard over it.  A fine mist of water rained down on them and seemed to freeze as soon as it had found something to touch down on.  It made the paths particularly slippery and was starting to soak through his clothes.

Chapter 6

The scenery was very white as Bucky drove North, but inside the car, with the heater running, he was nice and warm.  You sat beside him in the passenger seat with a blanket over your lap, gazing out at the field of white, looking a little sleepy.

The two of you had spent a week in Springfield and then packed up the car to start heading North.  The thaw was only just beginning back home, but neither of you wanted to risk your sudden disappearance.  So the two of you had left while there were still large mounds of snow piled on the sides of the road and heavy morning frosts.

He had loved spending that week with you.  Seeing you always made his mood lift and he was enjoying getting to know you better.  As much as magic freaked him out, it was fascinating hearing about your life and how you had adapted to the very isolating nature of it.  Not only that, but he’d loved planning this trip with you.  Sharon was going to look after Alpine and the two of you had hired a car and were going to drive from Shelbyville to Niagara Falls, you’d spend a few weeks there before going to Montreal, then Quebec, and finally Saguenay.  You had said on this side of the country that was as North as you could go before the magic that kept you there ran out.  The two of you had booked hotels and made plans for stupidly touristy things that Bucky had never actually done before.  Even though this was the most abnormal reason for a trip he could imagine, it made him feel the most normal he’d felt in years.  Now it was happening, he felt like any other normal couple taking a road trip together.

Chapter 5

A year is a long time when you’re waiting for something.  Time really was relative and it dragged when you were observing it.

When you had disappeared almost a year ago, you’d called Bucky from Germany.   Bucky tried to convince Sam or Sharon to find something he could do over there, something he could track down or someone who needed protection, but by the time anything had been set up, you’d moved on again.

You had called again from New Zealand around six months after that.  He hadn’t been able to find anything he could be sent to New Zealand for at all.  The two of you had called and texted constantly while you had been around, and Bucky had started to pride himself on his ability to sext.  It was something he had not understood at all when people had talked about it around him, but he found when he was actually doing it, the protection he had between the phone and you felt safe.  He could open up more and say things he would never say out loud.  He didn’t have to worry about his body, or stamina, or accidentally hurting anyone.

Chapter 3

Bucky had lost himself in the kitchen.  It was strange, but before he started cooking, the idea of you coming over for dinner had been stressful.  He’d tried dating before (though infrequently) but he’d never felt the kind of connection he had with you.  There was always something there that made him feel out of place.  His age or trauma or work.  He always felt other and he could never quite relax and let someone else in.

Yet with you, he felt he could open up.  The problem was, that very idea worried him.  Partially because he didn’t know who Bucky in a relationship was, but mostly he worried if part of the reason he felt so safe was that this had to be temporary.  You were here for a few weeks, and then you’d be gone.  It didn’t matter what he did during that time.  There was no risk of getting too attached and if you discovered that he was really a monster, well, you’d be free of him soon enough anyway.

Chapter 2

Bucky arrived at the movies twenty minutes before he had arranged to meet you and then proceeded to mentally curse himself out the entire time because of how eager it made him look.  He was just considering leaving and coming back again so he could maybe come off as fashionably late when you appeared behind him and tapped him on the shoulder.

He jumped and spun around, instantly going into fight mode, and when he saw your slightly bemused expression, he instantly relaxed.  You were wearing another warm winter coat that looked impossibly spring-like.  This one was sky blue with daisies printed on it as if they were polka dots.  Your hat, scarf, and gloves were in a darker shade of blue, and on the side of your beanie was a crochet daisy that matched the ones on your coat.  “Hey, you’re early,” he said.

Chapter 1

Bucky pulled the collar of his coat up and wrapped his arms around his chest.  He thought it might have actually been beginning to warm up a little today when he first headed out but the bitter winds and thick cover of snow and slush that crunched under his feet and made him think he was going to slip every third step, said otherwise.

Despite the handle of Winter Soldier that had been given to him, Bucky really did hate the cold.  He had never been a huge fan of winter.  He always preferred trying to find novel ways to cool off in summer than piling on several layers during the winter.  Adding on things like how he was expected to salt paths and shovel steps, and the fact that the cold air did nothing but exacerbate Steve’s medical conditions, which meant he was normally inside sick while Bucky was out in the cold doing chores, winter was not his season.

The Hookup

Bucky walked along beside Clint with his hands jammed into the pockets of his leather jacket.  There was an unseasonable chill to the air and it seemed to want to creep past his layers of clothing and run straight up his spine.

The archer appeared to be immune to it.  He chatted away happily wearing just his t-shirt over jeans and gesticulating wildly as he told Bucky the story of what happened in Tokyo.  Bucky knew Clint was buzzed.  It was probably Bucky’s fault that Clint was buzzed.  He wondered if it was being tipsy that was keeping Clint warm.

They’d been on a mission.  Not a particularly demanding one.  It had been low effort and wrapped up quickly, but all missions required debriefs and Steve had been in fine form, talking on and on and on about what had been done wrong and what had been right.  Like he wasn’t the most reckless and dumbass one on the whole team of reckless dumbasses.

Chapter 11

Steve was thankful for the paperwork and debrief he had to do before the date he had asked both you and Bucky on.  He liked romance but he wasn’t good at it and this whole ‘dating two people at the same time’ thing was so far out of his wheelhouse it has its own wheelhouse.  Work, however, he might hate but he was good at it.  It gave him time to unpack things and calm down and so by the time he was headed back downstairs the anxiety he had about fucking this all up completely was at a manageable level.

When he went inside he was not at all prepared for what greeted him.  He had expected to be taking you both out – that you’d be dressed and just waiting for him to be done with work.  Instead, the apartment had been cleaned and the lights were dimmed.  Candles had been placed around the room and added a woody aroma to the smell of cooking wafting from the kitchen where you and Bucky were cooking together.  You’d both dressed up too.  You were wearing a layered, burgundy, lace dress with dark beaded jewelry.  While Bucky had black jeans paired with a black button-up that was open at the neck and the sleeves were rolled up.  He’d also tied his hair back and shaved off his beard.  The way he smiled as you passed him a jar of spices reminded Steve so much of the guy he’d been before the war.  The carefree Bucky who was always there to have his back or drag him out on some double date.

There was a time that Bucky was always just there.  Steve knew that when he went downstairs to walk to school, Bucky would be leaning against the stoop, waiting for him to come down.  While they weren’t in the same class, he knew that when he got into the inevitable fistfight during lunch, Bucky would be there, stepping in.  Even when he didn’t want him to.  Even when it made him feel even smaller to have him do that.

He was there on weekends, messing around together even as he hit on girls.  He was there when they both dropped out of school to get jobs.  He was there when his mom died.  Bucky was a constant in his life.  Where there was that scrawny Stevie kid, there was Bucky.  They were two peas in a pod.

Steve loved Bucky.  Of course, he did.  But it was a love that was unspoken and taken for granted.  He was a constant and that familiarity made it hard to realize how special it was.

It wasn’t until he left for war, that Steve realized there was more there.  When he woke up in the morning and he wasn’t greeted to the sound of Bucky breathing in the bed beside him.  He realized he missed his familiar, reassuring presence.  Even the army training and experiment and USO tour didn’t dull that ache in his heart.

Steve loved him.  He loved him with every part of him.  It burned in him.  He didn’t know why he couldn’t figure that out while he had him there with him.  It took him losing him again and again how much Steve needed Bucky.  How without him it was like a piece of him was missing.  The piece that made him Steve.

He wished he’d realized sooner.

More than that, he wished he’d stop losing him.
