Chapter 13

A droplet of water escaped from Pepper’s hair as it lay plastered against her neck.  It curved around her throat and rolled over her collarbone.  It was hypnotizing and you wanted to lean in and lick it off her skin.  Your eyes followed it as it followed the curve over her breast, clung to her nipple for a moment, and dripped on the floor.

“Stop staring at my ex’s tits,” Tony said, slapping your ass as he passed you.

“She’s my ex too,” you argued.  “I can stare.”

Chapter 12

The need to drink was almost overwhelming.  If it wasn’t for the fact that you’d locked yourself in your room to avoid being questioned by Pepper and you’d cleared the house of alcohol you’d already be drunk.  Deep down you were thankful for the fact your house was dry, but it was really deep down, and right now you were cursing yourself for not hiding a bottle of vodka in a false book.

It was bad enough that Pepper and Tony had broken up and were using you as some kind of go-between.  It was worse still now Pepper had started living with you while she figured out what she was going to do next and you had to deal with your ex-girlfriend being in your personal space knowing that she had chosen someone else over you.  Then to add to all of that, at a brunch where Tony had tried to pry you for information about Pepper, he’d dropped a small bomb on you; all those years ago when Tony had told you he didn’t think you should be friends-with-benefits, he’d meant that the two of you should start dating.

Chapter 11

Apart from the whole, detoxing and learning to not automatically just turn to drugs or alcohol for everything from simple boredom, being minorly inconvenienced by something, and fitting in socially, rehab was pretty nice. The facility was exclusive, on the beach, and mostly involved lazing about in beach chairs getting sun.  There was yoga, meditation, tennis, and swimming, dotted in between haute cuisine and therapy sessions.

It was so good that you ended up checking in three times over the next four years before it finally seemed to stick.

Or maybe that was just the fact you couldn’t stop drinking or taking drugs.

Chapter 10

To say the events of 2008 were dramatic was a complete understatement.  First Tony’s kidnapping, followed by his return three months later, your first real fight with Pepper, the knowledge that Tony was planning to become some kind of superhero via a mech he was building, and deciding that your long term friends-with-benefits arrangement with Tony was at an end.

While you were dealing with the repercussions with all of that and making amends with Pepper, Tony had gone all out with his idea to make a mech.  It wasn’t long until news reports about some kind of robotic drone had been spotted in Afghanistan, and random UFO-style sightings of it were seen around LA.

Chapter 9

The room was empty when you woke.  That wasn’t unusual when you slept over at Tony’s place, but it still surprised you when you stretched out to touch him and your hands only touched the Egyptian cotton sheets.  He’d only returned from Afghanistan yesterday and you’d thought that he’d sleep through given he’d just been through three months of torture that you knew at least included nonconsensual body modification along with a full day of travel and press conferences.  Clearly, some things never changed – even after life-changing events.

You got up and took your time in the shower.  It had been a long time since you’d slept over at his house and you took your time to enjoy his large shower with the multiple showerheads.  You closed your eyes, letting the waterfall stream run over you as you used his Tom Ford shower gel, inhaling the citrusy scent that reminded you of Tony.  A scent that you had missed so badly over the past three months.

Chapter 8

It was a month before your record label started to threaten you with legal action due to a breach of contract.  You got one month to grieve for the loss of one of your closest friends, and that was it.  After that, you had to pay for the right to keep grieving.

The month was turbulent, to say the least.  With the grief you and Pepper were both experiencing, you were leaning on each other a lot.  The problem was you were also leaning on alcohol – and on occasion other less legal drugs – which meant you weren’t always the best person for Pepper to lean on.

Chapter 7

By the time Pepper Potts showed up at your house you’d already gotten through half a bottle of Vodka and you were slurring your words.  She let herself in – she’d had the keys and passcodes to your place since the first time you started dating all those years ago – and even in your drunken state, you could see how red her eyes were.

Pepper wasn’t a crier.  She always had things handled.  She was cool and level-headed and could think rationally even in the most stressful situations.  It was what made her such a good assistant, especially for someone like Tony.  Even the times you had fought she was more rage than sorrow.  She was the one that calmly dealt with everyone else being emotional, and yet here she was with eyes red from crying.  Crying because Tony had been taken while he’d been in Afghanistan.

Chapter 6

It was interesting how the tabloid rumor mills worked.  Practically everything they would say about you and Tony Stark was a lie.  You never dated.  There were never any breakups due to conflicting schedules.  There was never any trying again.  Tony was only ever your friend who occasionally you slept with.  You were just as close with him when you were on tour as when you were together.  They just couldn’t seem to fathom the fact that a man and a woman could be friends.  Which you supposed the ‘fuck-buddies’ component might have erased anything platonic about it, but it definitely didn’t have a romantic element.

Chapter 5

The sudden dip of the bed and tug of the sheet from your naked body ripped you from what had been a deep and peaceful sleep.  You slept better with people there.  Sometimes you wondered if that’s why you bedhopped so much, but then you’d remember that sex was pretty fucking awesome too, and you’d stop psychoanalyzing yourself.

It was still dark and as you opened your eyes a crack, you could only make out the outline of Pepper’s naked body as she sat up at the edge of the bed.  You reached over and grabbed at the sheet that she was holding against herself.

“Come back,” you complained, as the sheet tugged away, leaving her completely naked.  “It’s still dark.”

“I have to go,” she said, getting up.  “Tony expects me to be there with breakfast and coffee, and if he has a guest I’ll have to boot her out with her clothes dry cleaned.”

Chapter 4

No one really understood the relationship you had with Tony Stark, and boy did people like to speculate about it.  There was a cycle you would see on the tabloids.  First, you’d get photographed out together and the pictures would sell and be splashed on the covers over every two-bit rag out there ‘Tony Stark dating the lead singer of Arctic Fire’.  Then barely even a week later one of you would be seen with someone else and the headlines would all scream ‘cheating’ either you on Tony and or Tony on you.  Then some time would pass and everyone would have assumed you’d broken up, only to then get spotted out together and the cycle would start all over again.

Not that it was just the general public that didn’t get it.  Your friends and family would often ask what the deal was with you and Tony Stark.  You’d say he was your friend.  You were always met with sarcasm.

The thing was; he was your friend.  One of your closest.  You didn’t speak all the time, but when you did it was like no time had passed.  Sometimes you’d have sex.  Good sex.  The kind of sex that made you sweaty and weak and you’d feel three days later.
