Epilogue

Svana kept thinking she must be asleep and that what had happened since Thor had shown up and outed Loki as Odin.  She was trapped in a perpetual nightmare that she couldn’t seem to claw her way out of.

After arriving on Earth she and the other refugees had had to walk days before coming across any sort of civilization.  Everyone they passed looked at them like they were traveling jesters on their way to some kind of performance.  Many shouted at them and some sounded some kind of invisible horn, but none stopped or offered help.  When they finally reached the city it took some time before they were able to find an authority figure that took them seriously.

Not that being taken seriously helped their situation.  Noone seemed to know what to do with a group of Asgardian refugees.  They were held in a state of limbo and not even Brunnhilde, the Valkyrie that Thor had returned with, could convince them to do anything to help them.

Chapter 18

Despite the size of the ship, it was difficult for Svana to find somewhere to be alone.  Asgard was gone and all that was left of it was crammed in what people had been calling the ark.  They were all in shock but pleased to be alive.  Svana sympathized.  The only home she had ever known had just exploded in front of her eyes with her best friend and almost every other person she’d known along with it.  Only Thor remained and he had gathered a new group of friends around him and everyone else seemed to just be stuck staring reverently at him.  Their king was back and he’d saved them.

Chapter 17

Svana shrugged off Heimdall’s arm.  “What are you talking about?  I was sent to fetch you by Thor.”

“Thor and your beloved Loki are lost. They fell from the Bifrost and I can no longer see them,” Heimdal explained.  “A god who should be bound has been released and she has already started to slaughter our people.  She has already killed Fandral and Volstagg.  We must save who we can before the city is nothing but corpses doing her bidding.”

Chapter 16

Loki liked his plays.  He’d always had a penchant for storytelling – he was the god of stories after all.  He weaved a tale the way a loom weaved cloth.  Seeing his words brought to life on the stage was a special kind of pleasure that very few other things could match.

His latest production was his favorite yet.  He had written the story of how he’d saved the nine-realms with his sacrifice on Svartalfheim.  He had even taken a great actor from Midgard who he’d seen had played Loki on film.  The play had worked out wonderfully and on this beautiful day in Asgard, Svana had decided to join him.

Chapter 15

Svana’s appearance at Odin’s side seemed to be met with a mixture of suspicion and pity.  Everyone remembered the day when she had been outcast by the Allfather and so none suspected that she was his consort by choice.  Loki acted quickly to dispel those that might suspect that he was not who he claimed he’d be.  First Sif was sent away on a mission of an urgent diplomatic nature to a far-off realm where Loki knew she would be tied up in red tape indefinitely.

The warriors three were given important positions that kept them close enough for him to keep an eye on but far enough physically that they never actually saw the new king and study his changed nature.

Finally, Heimdall was dismissed from his position and cast out as a traitor for letting Thor leave Asgard.  Loki then placed Skurge in control of the Bifrost.  Someone who was witless enough for him to control easily enough, but strong enough to defend the gates from anyone who passed over the bridge with anything other than peaceful intent.

Chapter 14

Loki’s stay in the dungeons was not a long one.  When a breakout was coordinated by Malekith the Accursed that ended up with the murder of Frigga, Thor had come and broken him free.  Loki’s guilt over being the cause of what happened to his mother meant he was also as driven to stop the dark elf from destroying the nine realms, something that he wouldn’t have cared anything about even a week earlier.

So when it came to giving his life to stop the plans of the one who really caused the death of his mother – Loki laid it down readily.  Besides; dying a hero might make the sting of grief worse for both his father and Thor.

Svana heard all these proceedings through rumors and visions.  The Convergence was important to the seidr and even in her self-imposed exile, as the worlds came into alignment Svana sought out her sisters.

Chapter 13

Two years passed and while Svana remained in her self-imposed exile, Loki was in unimaginable trouble.  The fall hadn’t killed him after all, though why was impossible to say.  Instead, he’d been collected up by a battlecruiser that was under the employ of a Titan named Thanos.

Loki had always heard that Titans were an advanced yet peaceful race.  That was not true for Thanos.  Thanos had become hungry for power and some sort of misguided delusion that by killing half the population of the galaxy he’d be saving it.

Loki wasn’t sure if he was thankful or not that Thanos saw some use for him.

Loki spent two years being tortured and manipulated until he would practically have agreed to anything to get it to stop.  The carrot of being given Earth to rule was barely a factor in his decision when all he wanted was to end the pain he was in.

Chapter 12

Svana packed in a hurry.  She knew that after tonight there was no way that Loki would forgive her and chances were that Odin would want her arrested even if he did.  So it was better to flee now.  If Loki was arrested after tonight, then she could figure out a way to break him free and come back for him.  If by some chance he still managed to succeed in his plan and usurp the throne, it would be better for her to not be there for his wrath.

She packed light, just taking the things she loved or couldn’t live without, and hurried out through the underground passages.  They had been built eons ago to evacuate the city when needed and led to ruins deep in the Asgardian forest.

The tunnels hadn’t been used for eons, and by the time she reached the end of them, she was picking her way through partially collapsed portions and piles of rubble.  When she made it out into the ruins of old Asgard, the sun was coming up and she was exhausted.  She didn’t want to stay in the ruins though.  While she thought it was fairly safe, she knew it would be one of the places they checked if they did come looking for her.

Chapter 11

Svana retired to bed alone that night, knowing that Loki had further plans.  She knew he was to spend time with his mother at Odin’s side playing the dutiful son.  She knew he would return to Jotunheim and speak to Laufey.  He had told her so much of what he had planned.  How he was going to make it look like Laufey was planning to murder Odin, only to save the old king last minute and earn his spot as Odin’s most trusted son.

Svana wasn’t completely on board with that part of the plan, but she figured the worst that could happen would be that Laufey was successful in his attempt and she would never have to worry about Odin again.  Her role, for now, was minor.

So while she slept Loki put things into play.  He visited with his mother for a while and then went to Jotunheim and tempted Laufey with the offer of eight of the realms.  Upon his return, he was accosted by Heimdall.  Heimdall, always suspicious of Odin’s youngest son, yet even he was subdued with a few words.

Chapter 10

Loki sat, lazing back on the golden throne of Asgard, his legs spread and spinning Odin’s spear Gungnir around on the spot as Svana stood dumbfounded at the end of the throne room.  She had expected to be facing Odin right now.  She had expected that the old fool to be once again would cast her from the kingdom.  Instead, her best friend, occasional annoyance, and sometimes lover, was sitting on the throne.

“Hello, darling,” he said, smirking at her from where he sat.

“Loki?”  Svana asked, looking around like this may be one of Loki’s elaborate practical jokes.

He chuckled and patted his knee.  “Come here,” he said.  “Take a seat with your king.”

Svana took a few steps forward, looking around like she was expecting someone to jump out and scare her.  “Where’s Odin?” she asked.
