Chapter 6

Tony did his very best to try not to need you.  He stopped wallowing in self-pity about what happened with the team.  Yes, it sucked.  Yes, he wished it had gone differently.  He couldn’t change the past though.  He could only make the best of what he had now.  He made things right with Pepper and began working more as the director of the Avengers and not as much as an active field combatant.  Not that Iron Man wouldn’t be there, it was just that he tended to pilot the suits remotely now.  He developed a new suit that worked on nanotech so he could keep it on him at all times so that he’d never be stuck or lost again.  He was doing more charity work and spending more time with the people he loved most, and very gradually he started to realize he wanted to settle down and start a family.  There was more out there for him than just Avenging.

Chapter 5

Tony became a little obsessed with how to find you when he got home.  It might have been a distraction from the fact he was alone, shouldering the burden of the now disassembled Avengers alone, apart from Rhodey who was now paralyzed, and Vision whose heart was somewhere else.  That should have meant he was too busy and he’d have no time for anything except cleaning up this mess.

He was busy.  Almost constantly busy.  Yet every tiny moment that his mind was able to wander he would start spiraling, blaming himself, blaming everyone else, wishing that he could get blitzed so he wouldn’t keep thinking about everything that went wrong.

Chapter 4

Tony had made it home in time to change the palladium core, which crumbled in his hand as soon as he took it out of the reactor’s casing.  He had to blow the dust out of the connectors to even get the new one to work.  His phone was dead when he went to check if he had any messages, and when he’d gone down to drive his car the next time, it wouldn’t even start due to its fuel tank being drained dry.

It was such a strange phenomenon that Tony didn’t forget it.  Not this time.  The memory of you telling him he’d make it home if he went straight there and then everything immediately failing when he was safe would pop into his head at odd moments.  He wanted to investigate this weird phenomenon of a woman with a bar he only found by accident twice that seemed to know exactly how long a battery would last despite not knowing how far he had to go before he could recharge it.

Tony woke with a headache and his mouth feeling tacky, but he was warm, and the room was still dark, so he didn’t feel the need to move.

Besides, his face was buried in someone’s neck and their arms were around him, and for the first time in years, he felt safe and comfortable.  He wasn’t even sure where that feeling came from considering he wasn’t sure where he was or who he was with yet.  He’d been drinking to forget last night, and he’d well and truly forgotten everything.  All the way back to the fact he was dying.  All that he was aware of was how aside from the slight hangover, he felt really good, right down to his morning wood.

It was years before Tony saw that bar again.  So long that the memory of the place faded and became just another improbable thing in his alcohol-fueled daze, mixed in with other events like the time he drove his car into someone’s pool, and the night he went to a party at the playboy mansion and came to a week later in bed with two strange women in a hotel in Vegas with no memory of the entire week.  He got drunk so often and so completely back then, that it was just one fucked up hazy event after another, and a bar where the owner treated him with kindness was strange, but not strange enough to sear its way into his memory.

Then Tony experienced something both traumatic and life-changing.  Obidiah Stane, the man he’d considered a father figure, paid a group of terrorists to murder him.

Chapter 22

The cabin by the lake as you, Tony, and Pepper had been affectionately calling it, was the dream house you never realized you dreamed about.

Calling it a cabin was stretching the word slightly.  It was a log building, which was where it got the nickname cabin.  In reality, it was a two-story Cape Cod-style house with three bedrooms, and a large conservatory on one side that extended underground and acted as Tony’s lab.  The rooms were timber-lined and rustic making the lab stand out quite a bit when viewed from the inside.

Chapter 20

The buzz about trying for a baby brought with it a whole other lot of other changes too.  There was talk about moving out of the city.  Tony had it in his head that he’d like to build a place in the country – maybe a little farm like his friend Clint, maybe by a lake with a dock.  The idea of fishing and having a rowboat seemed important.  He kept saying that you could have a garden.  He was obsessed with the idea of gardening and growing his own food.  He kept talking about salads made with his own kale and fresh grilled corn right off the stalk.  You weren’t sure if he had even gardened once in his life, but you were excited by his enthusiasm.  You’d be fine anywhere, as long as there was studio space, but as these potential major lifestyle changes came into place, you started to wonder if it might not be time to call it quits with the band.  Or if not that, dial it back so that it wasn’t what dominated your life anymore.  You had been making hit records for coming up to thirty years, much longer than most and you didn’t want to be the sad old rocker stereotype.  You didn’t want to keep touring every three to four years.  Especially not if you had kids.  Maybe now was the time to hang it up and return to just writing music because you loved it.
