Synopsis: Tony Stark’s life is going off the rails.  He feels alone, misunderstood, and running on empty.  No fuel, no battery life, no signal.  If he could just find one last bar he might be okay.  He pulls into the parking lot of Fin, a dive bar with no discernible location.  It could be the last bar he goes into.

A/N:  This is not a romance story.  Reader and Tony are not endgame.  In fact, if anything it’s a story about Tony trying to free himself from his need for the reader and her powerset.  Almost canon-compliant with a change at the end that you should be happy about.

Tony was drunk.

He was too drunk to be driving the car he was currently behind the wheel of, but not drunk enough to want to stop drinking.

Chapter 30

The date night with Steve and Bucky and been perfect.  The fear that they’d take everything the wrong way had been completely unjustified.  They’d loved the nostalgia attached to each part and in a way, it gave them something that they had been missing.  It was easy enough for you to share your past with them.  You could take them to see the house you grew up in.  You had photos of your time in school and with your family.  There were ways you could share the nostalgia of your childhood with them that were easy and they could find joy in.  The same wasn’t true for either Bucky or Steve.  Sure some of the buildings were still around but the city had changed so much.  It was a rare moment that they could share something with you that was from their childhood.  That was especially so for Bucky whose memories of the time were hazy and muddled.  The date for him had been like he’d rediscovered a part of his past.

Chapter 29

“Bucky!  Have you got any cash for school lunches?” Steve called down the stairs as he tried to wrangle both Alice, Jacob, and Isabella down with their backpacks.  There was a familiar energy to the house that made it feel more like home than it had in months.  The same kind of noisy chaos from back before the blip, when you and Steve carried grief with you together, supporting each other in a way that had created a happy loving home.  That was how things had been lately.  Yes, it was different.  Jacob lived with Callie in the flat out the back, and Isabella only really came to stay one weekend out of three.  Yet, it was becoming normal again.  Not just normal.  Good.

It was Monday – the worst day for getting them all to school, and today was extra chaotic because Isabella had spent the weekend with you and Callie had been out late on a date.  You appreciated the time with just Steve, Bucky, and the kids, and even more, you appreciated the chaotic struggle to get them all out the door on time.

Epilogue

The room was decorated in balloons and streamers we’d brought up from Earth and there was chaos everywhere.  The twins had turned one and we were having a party to celebrate.

It was a special celebration for so many reasons.  This year had been such a  big change for us, and so much had happened in it.  From making new friends to saving the planet and everything in between.  Yet, here we all were safe, happy, and together after a year on a different planet.  We wanted to celebrate – not just because the twins were now a year old according to Earth time, but because this would be the last time we were all together for a little while.  Eddie would be returning to Earth with Lyra and Rory so that Lyra could give birth, and while they said they’d be back, who knew when that would be.  Of course, we would go see them, but for all of us to be here with all our children and grandchildren to see Nova and Thour turn one was special.

Chapter 22

The cabin by the lake as you, Tony, and Pepper had been affectionately calling it, was the dream house you never realized you dreamed about.

Calling it a cabin was stretching the word slightly.  It was a log building, which was where it got the nickname cabin.  In reality, it was a two-story Cape Cod-style house with three bedrooms, and a large conservatory on one side that extended underground and acted as Tony’s lab.  The rooms were timber-lined and rustic making the lab stand out quite a bit when viewed from the inside.

Chapter 28

Resilient.  It was probably the word that best described you.  Change hurt and sometimes it felt like you were broken and there was no way you would ever really be happy again.  Then slowly those happy moments returned and became more common until they outweighed the grief and the sadness and stress you were carrying, and you could once again say you had a happy life.  That life – and the happiness that surrounded it might be completely different to the one that came before, but it was happiness.  You might break, but you were always able to pull yourself back together and find something new.

This new life was strange in so many ways.  Your closest friend lived in a two-bedroom annex you’d built in your backyard with Jacob, a boy you both considered a son.  You lived in the house with your husband and his boyfriend – a man you were quickly starting to think of as your boyfriend too, and your daughter Alice.  Your oldest son Ryan was away at college, and your other daughter Isabella was gone, taken by her biological parents.  It was a strange family setup where their links of biology were rare with only you and Alice, and Callie and Jacob sharing them, and where there seemed to be far too many parents than you’d normally find.  Yet, while you still missed Bella and grieved for her every day, you had found happiness again.

Chapter 46: Celebrations

The reception for Billy and Teddy’s wedding went until the early morning.  The little ones were taken to bed by Bruce and Wanda later than they normally would stay up, but Eddie, Rory, and Lyra switched out with them an hour or so later when Lyra ended up waning due to her pregnancy.

We spent the night drinking and feasting and dancing.  Billy and Teddy could not tear their eyes off each other, even when they danced with their parents they’d glance back at the other.  They had been together for years now.  They weren’t exactly college sweethearts, but fairly close.  Yet they looked at each other with the overwhelming gaze of new love.

As far as pregnancies went, Pepper’s was pretty breezy.  Her morning sickness was relatively mild and it didn’t last long.  She had a lot of energy and she seemed to love planning all the appointments and following all the rules.  It meant that the three of you were free to just enjoy it and worry about all the other strange little quirks of navigating a pregnancy when you were three of the most famous people in the world who also happened to be in a polyamorous relationship.

Chapter 27

A month after coming to Steve with your proposal that he could be with both you and Bucky, the house had begun to settle into a new kind of normalcy.  Work was slowing down now that there was a legal ruling regarding custody, and you were mostly working on running support groups for both parents who had now lost their adoptive children and the ones having to come to terms with missing five years of their children’s lives.  Sometimes you still needed to play mediator, but it was only to help families who wanted to work together to give a child the best possible outcome.  You were less stressed, and you weren’t needed as much.
