You were exhausted before you even made it home.  You had needed two taxis to get you there because Callie didn’t want to be separated from Jacob but Jacob didn’t want to be separated from you.  You were thankful really.  You were absolutely not ready to let Jacob go yet.  You didn’t think you would ever be – but not today with everything else that was happening.

You had sent Steve multiple texts while you were in the cab.  You knew he wouldn’t get to them for a long time, and there was part of you hating him for that. You needed him.  You were barely holding it together and you needed your husband here to help pick this apart.  You also hated yourself for thinking that.

Chapter 14

“Mister Sampson!” you called, as you dropped to your knees beside the unconscious body of your old neighbor and friend.  She had been dead for the past five years and had just reappeared thanks to your husband and his friends undoing the snap made by a Mad Titan.  Callie had had a panic attack due to the stress of her sudden arrival in a world that had moved on from her.  Your kids – including Jacob, her biological son – all looked on from the doorway terrified.  You felt torn in two directions.  You needed to comfort them and tell them everything was okay, but you also needed to get Callie up off the floor of your old apartment building.  “Mister Sampson, I need help!”

You turned your attention back to the dark-haired woman lying on the ground.  “Callie,” you said, tapping her cheek.  “Callie, honey, I can’t carry you.  I need you to wake up.”

Chapter 13

The following day you woke up to Steve making breakfast for two very excitable children.  Jacob and Isabella had clearly missed their dad and having him make them pancakes before school was both exciting and meant they could unload all their news for the week.

You couldn’t help but be filled with dread as you listened to their happy yammering.

As the kids ate and talked with their dad, you started to think it was a bad idea to send them to school today.  You had asked Steve to promise that if they bring people back, that they did so safely, but the thought of them sitting in a chair in class and a former student reappearing in the same chair wouldn’t get out of your head.

Chapter 12

Despite the fact you had married the man best known as Captain America, you’d only really dealt with Captain America a few times and they were so long ago that you’d forgotten what he was like.  Steve Rogers the man who had given up the title and worked in a crisis support group and ran group sessions for people suffering from survivor’s guilt, was a devoted partner and a loving father who was almost always home for family dinners and ready to put the kids to bed.  He usually picked up the kids from school and was quick to move around his schedule when your work pulled you away.

Captain America was none of these things.

Over the next handful of weeks, you barely saw him.  He didn’t always come home and when he did it was very late.  He told you what was going on – about the meeting with Tony that had ended badly – about going to see Bruce who had agreed to try and build a time machine – about how slow going the process was.  You knew when he thought they were close to cracking the problem and bringing everyone back, you knew when he thought they were never going to figure it out.  The general consensus from the team was that time travel meant you couldn’t change anything that had already happened.  So while you knew exactly where they were up to in this plan of theirs, you had no idea what Steve planned to do once everyone was back.  The more time he spent away from home being Captain America, the more you started to worry that meant he wouldn’t come home at all.

Chapter 11

Steve had not been wrong when he said things would be different.  Ryan moving out to go to college happened a few months after the wedding.  It had been surprisingly hard on everyone.  The trauma of losing parents and children and fiancés and friends meant separation anxiety, so when it came to Ryan moving out he was scared to go, you and Steve were scared to let him, and Isabella and Jacob were panicked at the mere idea he wouldn’t come home at the end of the day.

Thankfully Ryan had gotten into NYU, so he wasn’t exactly going far, and after a few trips out to see him in the city and regular weekend visits home, everyone started getting used to the idea that just because Ryan wasn’t home every night didn’t mean he’d never come home.

Jacob started school too, which meant that on weekdays when you had no urgent work to go to, you and Steve had time for just the two of you.  You had thought that you couldn’t fall any deeper in love with Steve.  You were wrong.  Having time to just be together without the kids or the pressure for romance deepened those bonds you had formed.  It was nice exercising together, or napping together, or cuddling on the couch and watching movies that you couldn’t watch with the kids around.  Just putting yourselves and your relationship with each other first for a change.

You were exhausted and elated.  Full of joy and ready to sleep.  Your stomach was full of butterflies and your feet ached.

The wedding had been magical, and the reception had been amazing.  You’d forgotten that weddings could be fun.  All the work and over-thinking that had led up to the event, the stress you felt, and the way you kept overthinking doing the big wedding at all – it had all melted away and you were left only feeling happy and loved and so very, very tired.

After the ceremony, you and Steve had gone to say hello to all the kids who had come to sing at your wedding.  It had been the women from the foundation that had organized it and you had felt so overwhelmingly grateful to them and the children.  The tears you had shed as you hugged each of the kids who had come to see you get your happy ending, had been those of joy.

Chapter 9

There was a weird feeling of melancholy as you dressed for your wedding.  The kind where you started to think you were making a mistake.  Not the getting married part.  You loved Steve and whatever serendipity that brought you to him didn’t change that.  As much as the past had traumatized you, and as much as the loss of the people you loved hurt, as much as if given the option to go back and change it so it had never happened in the first place, that trauma had brought you to Steve and you loved him and you found a safe and happy place with him at your side.  You wanted to marry him.  You wanted to be his wife and for him to be your husband.  You had been living like that was the case for over a year now.  It wasn’t a mistake to marry him.

This wedding might have been a mistake.  That feeling had been growing since the third anniversary of the day everyone turned to dust.  After Steve had told you that he’d always expected Bucky to be the one beside him on his wedding day you started to think of all the other people who wouldn’t be there.  Along with Bucky, there would have been Sam Wilson who would have been Steve’s best man.  Wanda Maximoff who Steve always spoke about like she was a daughter.  Vision who Steve carried the most guilt over losing.  T’Challa who Steve always spoke of with a mixture of respect and fondness.  For you, it was family members.  It was Callie, your closest friend who you’d leaned on in your hardest times, the mother of the little boy you now thought of as your son.  It was Alice, your daughter who should be the one dressed in white taffeta and satin ready to blow bubbles as you made your way down the aisle.

Chapter 8

The news of your engagement to Steve was met with a lot of excitement from the kids and quite a bit from Natasha Romanoff too.  While Steve still had friends around after the half of life turned to dust, most of his close friends had been taken out and the ones that remained he was mostly estranged with.  You didn’t know all the details and you knew he still occasionally saw Rhodey and Bruce, but besides them, it was Natasha that Steve was closest to.  She’d been trying to hold the team together but generally speaking she was alone out at the old Avengers Facility that had been sitting all but vacant since everything had gone down.  The news that Steve was engaged made Natasha light up for the first time in the last two and a half years.

For a few months, you rode that wave of excitement.  You made no firm plans for the wedding, but the initial conversations about it were all full of joy.  You spoke about potential venues and themes – how big it should be – what time of year.  You would talk to the kids about how they might be involved in the wedding, and you talked about how you’d handle the honeymoon given you had children with attachment disorders.

Chapter 6

The sun had only just started coming up when you woke.  It was a little infuriating waking before the kids.  As a parent of three, one of whom was under five, sleep was a rare commodity so when you woke up before they did, it felt like your brain was trying to sabotage you.

Still, it was nice to be comfortable and warm in bed, wrapped in Steve’s arms with the sounds of birds outside the window.

You rolled over and nuzzled into his neck hoping you’d get back to sleep.  Steve’s arms tightened around you and without even opening his eyes he started kissing your neck.
