It was the day of the festival that was being held for all the families of children who had been left behind before the blip. It was an event that you had worked hard to organize in the hopes that the newly blended families could see they weren’t alone. You wanted them to see that the world was different now and that different could be good. You wanted to celebrate these new families and how they had adapted to the world.

The date night with Steve and Bucky and been perfect. The fear that they’d take everything the wrong way had been completely unjustified. They’d loved the nostalgia attached to each part and in a way, it gave them something that they had been missing. It was easy enough for you to share your past with them. You could take them to see the house you grew up in. You had photos of your time in school and with your family. There were ways you could share the nostalgia of your childhood with them that were easy and they could find joy in. The same wasn’t true for either Bucky or Steve. Sure some of the buildings were still around but the city had changed so much. It was a rare moment that they could share something with you that was from their childhood. That was especially so for Bucky whose memories of the time were hazy and muddled. The date for him had been like he’d rediscovered a part of his past.

“Bucky! Have you got any cash for school lunches?” Steve called down the stairs as he tried to wrangle both Alice, Jacob, and Isabella down with their backpacks. There was a familiar energy to the house that made it feel more like home than it had in months. The same kind of noisy chaos from back before the blip, when you and Steve carried grief with you together, supporting each other in a way that had created a happy loving home. That was how things had been lately. Yes, it was different. Jacob lived with Callie in the flat out the back, and Isabella only really came to stay one weekend out of three. Yet, it was becoming normal again. Not just normal. Good.

It was Monday – the worst day for getting them all to school, and today was extra chaotic because Isabella had spent the weekend with you and Callie had been out late on a date. Chapter 28

Resilient. It was probably the word that best described you. Change hurt and sometimes it felt like you were broken and there was no way you would ever really be happy again. Then slowly those happy moments returned and became more common until they outweighed the grief and the sadness and stress you were carrying, and you could once again say you had a happy life. That life – and the happiness that surrounded it might be completely different to the one that came before, but it was happiness. You might break, but you were always able to pull yourself back together and find something new.

This new life was strange in so many ways. Your closest friend lived in a two-bedroom annex you’d built in your backyard with Jacob, a boy you both considered a son. You lived in the house with your husband and his boyfriend – a man you were quickly starting to think of as your boyfriend too, and your daughter Alice. Your oldest son Ryan was away at college, and your other daughter Isabella was gone, taken by her biological parents. It was a strange family setup where their links of biology were rare with only you and Alice, and Callie and Jacob sharing them, and where there seemed to be far too many parents than you’d normally find. Yet, while you still missed Bella and grieved for her every day, you had found happiness again.

Work was slowing down now that there was a legal ruling regarding custody, and you were mostly working on running support groups for both parents who had now lost their adoptive children and the ones having to come to terms with missing five years of their children’s lives. Sometimes you still needed to play mediator, but it was only to help families who wanted to work together to give a child the best possible outcome. Chapter 26

The house you had bought on your own with your own money over four years ago was a large family home in Brooklyn. It wasn’t fancy, nor was it in a particularly good neighborhood. As much as you would have loved to buy a five-story brownstone on the upper east side of Manhattan, even with Steve’s years of back pay from the army, you couldn’t have afforded that. Still, your home was three stories and had four bedrooms – enough so that each of your kids could have their own room. It had three bathrooms and the kitchen was roomy with a floating island. It had a backyard and even though it was oddly shaped and you had to go up a flight of stairs to access half of it, it was big enough for a trampoline and a basketball hoop. It was a good home for a family, and even though you and Steve had planned a lot of upgrades that you’d never gotten to, it was comfortable, big enough for all of you, and it was yours.

Numb. It was the only way to describe the feeling you had waiting for Steve to get back from returning the stones. The wound of Isabella being taken from you paired with the sheer bone-deep exhaustion you had from work had pushed you into a level of depression where you were just working on autopilot and not feeling anything at all. You’d wished that there had been more time between Isabella leaving and Steve returning the stones because on top of the fact you needed to grieve with him, you couldn’t help but think something terrible was going to happen and he’d get stuck in the past or worse be killed and you’d have no way of ever knowing.

You were sure the kids were picking up on your feelings too. They were quiet and withdrawn most of the day and Jacob kept breaking down into tears. It was understandable. He’d lost his sister too, and with his dad at work along with you barely emoting, it was bound to affect him strongly.

Chapter 24

The following two weeks you spent as much time as you could letting Isabella know that you and Steve would always be her family and that if when she was older she wanted to find you again, you’d be waiting. You wanted to make sure her last memories of you were good, and that she knew for sure you weren’t rejecting her. You knew it was going to make her parents seem like the bad guys – and you knew they were trying to do what they thought was best – but it was better if they looked like the bad guys than for her to think that she had been abandoned again.

The problem was that there was also so much else going on. You were helping supervise handovers over children, and petitioning the government to reconsider the position that allowed parents blipped from being able to cut off all contact with their adoptive parents. The kids still had school to attend and Steve was still working with Bruce to rebuild the time travel device. It didn’t leave much time for much else.

You had gone into work the day following Tony Stark’s funeral trying to feel positive. You were going to try making friends with Mark and Julia in the hope that there could be some agreement made that you could all be part of Isabella’s life. You were also going to start working harder at getting families who were in arguments about custody arrangements to try and do the same. You had an idea that maybe you could hold a picnic or book out Luna Park for all the families that were affected and maybe under a relaxed setting everyone could see that these children were all loved and maybe it could stop being a conversation about who had the right to raise the children, and turn into one about how can everyone involved be a part of their children’s lives.

That was your hope anyway. By mid-morning that hope had been shattered.
