Epilogue

The room was decorated in balloons and streamers we’d brought up from Earth and there was chaos everywhere.  The twins had turned one and we were having a party to celebrate.

It was a special celebration for so many reasons.  This year had been such a  big change for us, and so much had happened in it.  From making new friends to saving the planet and everything in between.  Yet, here we all were safe, happy, and together after a year on a different planet.  We wanted to celebrate – not just because the twins were now a year old according to Earth time, but because this would be the last time we were all together for a little while.  Eddie would be returning to Earth with Lyra and Rory so that Lyra could give birth, and while they said they’d be back, who knew when that would be.  Of course, we would go see them, but for all of us to be here with all our children and grandchildren to see Nova and Thour turn one was special.

Chapter 46: Celebrations

The reception for Billy and Teddy’s wedding went until the early morning.  The little ones were taken to bed by Bruce and Wanda later than they normally would stay up, but Eddie, Rory, and Lyra switched out with them an hour or so later when Lyra ended up waning due to her pregnancy.

We spent the night drinking and feasting and dancing.  Billy and Teddy could not tear their eyes off each other, even when they danced with their parents they’d glance back at the other.  They had been together for years now.  They weren’t exactly college sweethearts, but fairly close.  Yet they looked at each other with the overwhelming gaze of new love.

Chapter 45: Bonding

On the morning of the bonding, we all went to help Billy get ready after the Henhalda was completed.  He looked beautiful in a tunic that looked like it was woven from the stars themselves.  He wore a red cloak over the top of it and a white and gold kippah as a way of honoring his Jewish roots.  Piper was with us, while Flynn was with Teddy and his family.  Piper wore a simple white gown tied with gold rope and a gold circlet on her head with a red gemstone in the middle.

Chapter 44: The Bachelor Party

The day before Billy and Teddy’s bonding the boys had a joint bachelor party, much the way we did all those years ago.  We had planned to attend for a little while and leave before things started getting silly so they could let go without their parents cramping their style.  We were acting as the babysitters for the kids anyway.  Sarah and Paul had them for a few hours and then we’d come and swap out so they got to join in the fun.

They were celebrating in the feast hall which had been decorated so that rather than resembling the formal Asgardian dining room, it looked like a club back on Earth.  Or at last, an Asgardian-themed club back on Earth.  There was a bar set up on one side, and couches sat around the outside of the room with small tables.  The middle of the room was set up as a dance floor and Loki had even enchanted a light to give off a mirror ball effect.  Tony had set up a PA system and Eddie was acting as DJ for the night.  Friends and family had been brought in from Earth, including Teddy’s parents, and it was set to be a fun night.

It’s an unusual feeling to be aware of how happy you feel.  It wasn’t even that I hadn’t been happy lately.  I was generally very happy.  But with the attack and cleaning up, it had been an adrenaline high and then drop, and as all the reminders of good things piled back on us, I felt like I was walking on air.  The kids were settled and happy.  Each one was finding the things that helped them define themselves.  Whether that be a Valkyrie or an advisor, a parent or a mage, or whatever it was they were drawn to.  It was something that stood out more now – especially given that Lyra was now heavily pregnant, to the point we could feel the baby kicking, and Pietro was not only becoming quite adept at magic but had also taken to the role of advisor to Thor.

Chapter 42: Weapons

When the rubble from the battle with Cul had been completely cleared away and construction had begun to the degree that scaffolding was up and safety features were in place, the palace decided to hold the feast to celebrate the victory over the would-be king.

We started with a kind of parade from the rainbow bridge through the city.  ‘Parade’ wasn’t quite the right word for it.  It was just us, minus Thor who was waiting at the throne for us to arrive.  We were unarmed though Asgardian guards and some Valkyrie walked ahead and behind us in case of trouble.  No one was expecting it though.  The people were happy and as we walked through the city in a loose group people would come and speak to us or hand us gifts.  They were food, and drink mostly but also small trinkets, clothing for the little ones, flowers, and even the occasional weapon.  The people were always excited to see the children, especially the little ones, and they all stopped to pat the Vulparev and thank them for protecting the babies.  The streets were lined with stalls giving out pastries, mead, and punch.  There were spits with full animals roasting anywhere there was room to build the fire.  The whole city smelled like roasting meat and baking bread.  It was mouth-watering.

Chapter 40: Adrenalin Crash

“Oh god, the babies!”

The battle against Cul, Odin’s brother and god of fear had ended, and Bruce had been calmed from the Hulk rage he’d fallen into due to Cul’s powers. I came down from my adrenaline high after soothing Hulk back down so that Bruce could share the space with him, I remembered, the last time I had seen the babies was in the jaws of the Vulparev who had grown to be huge beasts in size and gained some kind of powers at the threat to the children.

I quickly grabbed the threads, searching for the babies.  When I wrapped my hands around them, I felt them with Natasha, Wanda, Clint, and Sam, as well as our grandchildren and the Vulparev.  I let out a sigh of relief though, the overwhelming urge to cry hit me.  I took a deep breath and looked back at the rest of my family who were gathered around and talking about what had just happened.  “I’m gonna go check on the kids,” I said as my iron suit bled back out of its casing.

The day started in such a nice way, there was no way I could have guessed how it would end up.

I got to sleep in again and woke to Steve wrapped around me snoring softly.  It was strange for a couple of reasons.  First; because I’d fallen asleep sandwiched between Tony and Wanda who were both feeling extra cuddling the night before.  The second reason was that Steve never slept in.  I think I could count the times Steve was awake after me in the past forty-odd years on one hand.  He was usually up with the sun, and even on the days that he decided to stay in bed and snuggle he was still awake doing it.

Chapter 38: Looking for Trouble

After Thor had come to tell me about the vision he’d had that I’d save all of Asgard, I became like a dog with a bone.  I became obsessed with the idea that I was supposed to save my new homeworld, but as Thor hadn’t seen how it happened, just the celebration after the fact, I needed to know why.  Every time I went out flying, either in my suit or with Brunnhilde on the winged horses, I’d circle in over the farms on the west where that feeling of fear was still lingering.  The space that held it had neither grown nor shrunk in months and yet no source for the disturbance could be found.  While it wasn’t growing, it was intensifying.  Guards were swapped out on the half-hour now and would come away pallid and shaking.  Wanda and Billy both refused to go there anymore, and the few times Natasha and Bucky had gone, they’d slipped into dark states that took days for them to lift themselves out of.  Steve had ended up banning them from going to check it out too.

Chapter 37: A Vision

Over the next month, the babies started crawling, which added a new level of chaos to everything.  We were getting closer to the bonding ceremony for Billy and Teddy, and anytime they showed up to do anything, at least two little terrors would be scrambling around trying to destroy everything.  Yet, despite things taking twice as long because we had to continually move things out of the reach of tiny hands, it was joyful.  Zak, Piper, and Flynn were delighted that their younger aunt and uncle were now properly on the move, and they led them around everywhere, raced them, or got on their hands and knees and crawled around with them giggling like mad.  When Ziggy and Anna were around they were little mama hens, clucking around the babies, teaching them to finger paint, use puzzles, and make things out of clay.
